Holiday Light Recycling, Extra Trash, and Holiday Tree Composting Return

Meridian, ID – The City of Meridian, in partnership with Republic Services, offers convenient ways to recycle holiday lights, dispose of extra trash, and compost real holiday trees.

“We are excited to bring back these seasonal waste disposal options for Meridian residents,” said Sayard Schultz, Solid Waste Coordinator. “Having a convenient way to recycle and compost items helps keep our community clean and sustainable and it’s a wonderful way to start the new year.”

Holiday Light Recycling (Dec. 3 – Jan. 18)
Meridian residents can recycle unwanted string lights, electrical cords, and plastic rope lights at the Meridian Transfer Station (MTS) for free. This program helps keep electronic waste out of the landfill. The MTS is located at 2130 W Franklin Rd, Meridian. For more information, visit meridiancity.org/light-recycling

Extra Trash Winter Collection (Dec. 30 – Jan. 4)
During the last week of December, residents can place an additional five (5) trash items (e.g., bags or bundles) out at the curb for free on their regular trash pickup day. This event only covers small trash items. Any large bulky items, such as couches or appliances can be scheduled for collection throughout the year by visiting meridiancity.org/bulky-items. The Extra Trash Winter Collection event only covers trash; any extra recyclables should be brought to the Meridian Transfer Station (at no additional cost). For more information and guidelines, visit meridiancity.org/extra-trash.

Holiday Tree Composting (Jan. 6 – Jan. 10)
Residents can easily dispose of unwanted real trees during the first full week in January. Place trees at the curb on your regular trash day. Remember to remove all decorations and flocking and cut any tree larger than 6 feet into 4-foot sections. Please no fake trees. Meridian residents can also drop off real trees at the Meridian Transfer Station from December 26 to January 18. For more information, visit meridiancity.org/tree-composting.

“The winter recycling and composting events are an excellent way to continue diverting items unique to this time of year from the landfill,” said Konrad McDannel of Republic Services.
