Growing up, I fondly remember going out caroling with my church youth group. From the traditional songs of “Silent Night” and “The First Noel” to the hot cocoa and snowy streets of Inkom, there was something special about the experience that really set the tone for Christmas and the holiday season. It meant this is a time for celebration of faith, joy of togetherness, and giving back to others. Now, 35 years later, there’s no better place to experience the magic of the season right here in Meridian. From downtowns decorations, community events and festive displays, Meridian is alive with Christmas spirit.
Last Friday, we kicked off the season in style with the annual Winter Lights Parade, where families gathered to enjoy festive floats, food trucks, hot cocoa, and the Christmas tree lighting at Generations Plaza. But the celebration didn’t end there. In addition to the Christmas in Meridian activities you can find here, you can keep the holiday spirit alive by visiting Downtown Meridian to see the lights and decorations adorning our businesses all month long. These businesses have worked hard to showcase their Christmas spirit as part of this year’s Holiday Decorating Contest. Not only can you shop local and support our small businesses, but you can also celebrate the creativity of these businesses by voting for the business you think is best decorated. Voting for the Holiday Decorating contest is open from December 9th through December 23rd online, so be sure to make your voice heard.
Also, don’t miss the “Merry & Bright: Bars, Boutiques, and Treats” event this Thursday, December 12th—a special evening where downtown businesses are offering exclusive discounts, delicious holiday treats, and a festive atmosphere. It’s the perfect chance to find unique gifts and support our downtown area.
There are also several other locations around Meridian where you can enjoy the Christmas festivities. Once again, the Scentsy campus has been adorned with 900,000 lights for the community to enjoy as you stroll their property. A little too cold and want to go for a drive? Well, the Roaring Springs property is set up just for that experience with the Christmas in Color light display. You can learn more here. And don’t forget about the hard work of your neighbors who have spent time decorating their homes for your enjoyment. You can find a list of Meridian homes to visit from the comfort of your own car here.
Most importantly, the holidays are about giving back, and there are many ways to embrace the spirit of generosity this season. At City Hall over the past few weeks, we’ve hosted an angel tree for the Salvation Army, giving folks the opportunity to donate presents for children in need. Additionally, you can always donate to the popular Toys for Tots. Local radio show host Nate Shelman has been camped out in the Meridian Crossroads shopping center in front of Sportsman’s Warehouse (3797 E Fairview Ave) collecting toys for this program. He will be there until Tuesday, December 10th at 7 pm. You can donate your toys there, or drop them off in a drop box at any of the Meridian fire stations until Sunday, December 15th to help others have a Merry Christmas.
Looking ahead, on Friday, December 20th, I’ll be joining the Salvation Army as a volunteer bell ringer at the Albertsons on Eagle & Amity from 4 to 6 PM. I’d love for you to stop by, say hello, and make a donation to support their incredible work. If you’re inspired to get involved, you can sign up to ring the bell yourself by visiting the Register to Ring website.
And for the first time ever, the Giving Machine is coming to Idaho, and we’re thrilled to have it here in Meridian soon. Starting December 14th, this unique vending machine will be at The Village at Meridian as part of the Light the World campaign. The Giving Machine allows you to “purchase” charitable gifts, such as meals for local families, clothing for children, or supplies for global humanitarian efforts, with 100% of your donation going directly to participating charities in our area, like the Boise Rescue Mission, the Idaho Youth Ranch, and the Women’s & Children’s Alliance. It’s a simple yet impactful way to be someone’s angel this holiday season.
As Christmas approaches, I encourage you all to celebrate, support, and give back as we share in the joys of this wonderful season. And if you are lucky enough to be visited by a group of caroling youth, enjoy one of the time-honored holiday traditions.
